Some Facts About Tomatoes
Tomatoes originate from the Andes where they grow wild and they were first cultivated by the Aztecs and Incas as early as 700AD. There are many different types of tomato. They can vary in color, shape and size. Tomatoes are a great source of vitamins A, C and E. They also contain potassium which is linked to lowering blood pressure and calcium for healthy bones and teeth. Recent research indicates that lycopene, found in tomatoes, may protect the body from free radicals which it is believed can trigger diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Tomatoes only contain 14 calories per 100g and contain virtually no fat or cholesterol.

Each tomato plant is harvested on alternate days. Picking starts at first light and fruit is transported to the packhouse, graded for size, quality and colour. They are then packed for despatch and can be on the shelves the next day. This process allows the fruit to ripen on the plant for as long as possible to enhance the overall flavour of the fruit
